Un jour, énervé par des piqûres de moustiques très agressifs, un promoteur a eu la géniale idée de construire une tour pour chauves-souris.
Construite en 1929 à l’initiative de Richter Clyde Perky, cette tour devait abriter des centaines de chauves-souris voraces destinées à débarrasser l’île de ses moustiques. Selon l’histoire locale, une fois les chauves-souris installées dans leur nouvelle demeure, elles ont immédiatement pris la poudre d’escampette et ne sont jamais revenues.
La tour est ensuite devenue une curiosité historique des Florida Keys et a été inscrite au National Register of Historic Places en 1982. Elle n’existe malheureusement plus : l’ouragan Irma l’a détruite en septembre 2017.

One day, irritated by the bites of particularly aggressive mosquitoes, a developer had the brilliant idea of building a tower for bats.
Built in 1929 at the initiative of Richter Clyde Perky, the tower was intended to house hundreds of voracious bats that would rid the island of its mosquitoes. According to local history, once the bats were introduced to their new home, they promptly flew away and never returned.
The tower later became a historic curiosity of the Florida Keys and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. Sadly, it no longer exists: Hurricane Irma destroyed it in September 2017.
