Out of Africa, contrairement à ce que laisse supposer son nom, est pourtant bien aux États-Unis, plus précisément en Arizona, à deux heures à peine de Phoenix. Le parc est situé à Camp Verde dans le comté de Yavapai.

La température et le paysage font penser à la région du Masai Mara au Kenya ou au Serengeti en Tanzanie. Peu de dépaysement pour les nombreux pensionnaires, les lions, zèbres, loups, tigres, ours…

Plus de la moitié des animaux ont été sauvés ou viennent de refuges et de zoos. Les animaux disposent de beaucoup d’espace, les propriétaires du parc, Dean et Prayeri Harrison, souhaitant recréer un peu leur habitat naturel tout en laissant le touriste les apprécier. Du coup, il vaut mieux y aller tôt dans la matinée pour éviter la chaleur car le climat devient vite irrespirable, mais surtout parce qu’il n’est pas toujours évident de voir les animaux quand il fait chaud. Ils préfèrent se cacher à l’abri de la morsure du soleil.

Un spectacle humoristique de tigres est donné chaque jour. C’est étonnant de voir ces fauves en liberté totale jouer dans l’eau avec leurs soigneurs. J’avoue avoir apprécié le message de la direction générale lorsqu’un tigre qui se sentait barbouillé n’a pas participé au spectacle et se contentait de se balader gentiment. Le team s’est excusé en disant simplement que le tigre n’avait pas l’air en forme et qu’ils préféraient le laisser tranquille.

Même si je sais qu’il s’agit d’une entreprise financière, le bien-être des animaux est important. Cette donnée est essentielle lorsque je choisis de visiter un parc animalier.

Le safari (compris dans le prix de l’entrée) fait le tour des installations et vous arrête tout près de l’enclos des girafes où Monsieur Girafe vous embrassera peut-être avec un grand coup de langue mauve.

Vous devez au moins compter 5 heures pour la visite complète du parc tellement celui-ci est immense. Si vous réservez l’option « Meet the animals », vous pourrez vous approcher des paresseux, des perroquets, ou encore des léopards.

J’ai eu l’occasion de nourrir les tigres, expérience assez incroyable. Durant le show dédié aux serpents, vous irez à la rencontre de ces inquiétants prédateurs du plus sympathique au plus venimeux.

Un parc animalier à conseiller tant pour la beauté du site que pour l’espace dont bénéficient les pensionnaires.

My encounter with the seductive Mr Giraffe and his friends

After seeing so many giraffes in the wild, I always find it a little sad to see them enclosed in a park. And yet this place is special. Whenever I have a spare moment while I’m in Arizona, I try to stop by. It is different from zoos and parks where animals barely have enough room to move. Here, there is plenty of space.

Out of Africa, despite what its name might suggest, is indeed in the United States, more precisely in Arizona, barely two hours from Phoenix. The park is located in Camp Verde, in Yavapai County.

The temperature and landscape are reminiscent of the Masai Mara in Kenya or the Serengeti in Tanzania. Not too much of a change of scenery for the park’s many residents: lions, zebras, wolves, tigers, bears…

More than half of the animals have been rescued or come from sanctuaries and zoos. The animals have plenty of space, with the park’s owners, Dean and Prayeri Harrison, wanting to recreate something of their natural habitat while still allowing visitors to appreciate them. As a result, it is better to go early in the morning to avoid the heat, as the climate quickly becomes unbearable, but above all because it is not always easy to see the animals when it is hot. They prefer to hide away from the bite of the sun.

A humorous tiger show is held every day. It is astonishing to see these big cats completely free, playing in the water with their keepers. I must admit I appreciated the management’s attitude when one tiger, who seemed to be feeling a little under the weather, did not take part in the show and simply wandered around quietly. The team apologised and simply explained that the tiger did not seem to be feeling well and that they preferred to leave him alone.

Even though I know it is a commercial business, animal welfare matters. This is essential to me when I choose to visit a wildlife park.

The safari, which is included in the admission price, takes you around the park and stops very close to the giraffe enclosure, where Mr Giraffe may well kiss you with one enormous swipe of his purple tongue.

You need to allow at least five hours for a complete visit because the park is so vast. If you book the “Meet the animals” option, you can get close to sloths, parrots and even leopards.

I had the opportunity to feed the tigers, which was quite an incredible experience. During the show devoted to snakes, you will encounter these unsettling predators, from the friendliest to the most venomous.

A wildlife park I would recommend both for the beauty of the setting and for the amount of space its residents enjoy.
