Cela suffit largement Ă me renseigner.
To those of you who torture animals: I hate you
I know. It is neither very subtle nor nuanced, nor particularly elegant.
But when it comes to you, I have no desire whatsoever to find a more presentable way of saying it.
I hate you. Not because you do not like animals. You are perfectly entitled not to like them.
I hate you because you deliberately choose to make a defenceless being suffer.
And there is a question I have been asking myself for a long time.
Does it make you feel strong? Give me a break…
Because it takes tremendous courage to hit an animal
I am trying to understand. You hit a dog. You burn a cat. You starve an animal locked away somewhere. You tie it up. You terrorise it. You beat it. You leave it to die. You abandon it.
And sometimes, as the ultimate touch of contemporary refinement, you film it.
But what exactly do you feel at that moment?
Power? Some form of superiority?
And how do we see you? Lacking a few brain cells, without a doubt; a pest, a loser, a pathetic human being, a cowardly brute, a contemptible individual, an abject creature, moral waste, a by-product of cowardice, a predator who preys on helplessness.
You look at an animal that sometimes weighs ten times less than you, depends entirely on human beings and does not even understand why it is being hurt, and you tell yourself:
âNow I really am somebody.â Impressive. Truly. It takes nerve even to think it.
Why is it always someone weaker than you?
That is what intrigues me most.
Why an animal? Why a being trapped in your home? Why the one that cannot call for help? Why the one that cannot tell anyone what you have done? Why the one that depends on you to eat, drink and go outside? You want to demonstrate your strength? What strength?
You prefer the one that cannot answer back. The one that retreats. The one that trembles. The one that sometimes ends up lying in a corner simply hoping it will stop.
And that is when I wonder whether, behind all that violence, there might ultimately be something far less impressive.
An immense weakness.
Because you have to be terribly small to need to make something smaller than yourself suffer in order to feel big.
Imagine for a second the level of emptiness required for an animalâs suffering to become an idea for content.
You prepare the phone. You frame the shot. You film.
And at no point in that sequence of actions does something in your brain say:
What the hell am I becoming? Just a massive piece of shit. There is the answer, without the politically correct filter.
Get the tissues out: no, your difficult life does not excuse you
You had a difficult childhood? You have problems? You are angry at the world?
Welcome to the company of several billion human beings.
Millions have been humiliated, abandoned, betrayed or abused.
And most of them do not hit their dog. Having been a victim gives nobody the right to create a new one.
So no.
I am not the court that forgives and gives yet another chance. I have no obligation to turn every abuser into a victim simply to make their behaviour more comfortable to analyse.
At some point, there is also something called responsibility.
And then there are those who watch
I have not forgotten you either. You who know the neighbourâs dog is being beaten. You who see that animal growing thinner behind a fence. You who hear the screams. You who know an animal is living locked away in appalling conditions.
And who say:
âI donât want any trouble.â
Nobody is asking you to play the hero, but reporting abuse is possible.
Animal welfare organisations exist.
The relevant authorities exist.
There is a difference between not putting yourself in danger and deciding that what you see is none of your concern.
Because while you hesitate to interfere in something that is supposedly none of your business, the animal may have nobody else.
And after you, someone else will have to repair the damage
Fortunately, there are other human beings. The ones who take in your victims. The ones who clean the wounds. The ones who pay the vets. The ones who spend nights beside a terrified animal. The ones who teach a dog that not every hand hits. The ones who sometimes wait months before an animal will simply allow itself to be touched.
âItâs only an animalâ
That phrase probably suits you very well.
As though the victimâs species somehow reduced the cruelty of the act.
But the question is not whether the victim is human.
The question is what your behaviour says about you.
And out of all the possibilities, you chose to make it suffer.
That tells me more than enough.
No, I do not wish âthe same thingâ on you… although…
I do not wish it on you. Well…
Not because I have suddenly developed enormous compassion for you.
I want something more useful. I want you to be identified, publicly. Convicted. I want penalties to be genuinely deterrent and to hit your wallet, or your parentsâ wallet if you are still a minor.
And above all, I want you to be banned from ever keeping an animal again.
Because another dog or cat should not have to become the guinea pig used to find out whether you have changed.
So tell me: do you still feel strong?
Because from the outside, I can assure you, the picture looks very different. I see absolutely nothing worthy of respect.
So yes, I hate you.
But perhaps even that is not quite the right word.
Because hatred still implies a certain degree of consideration.
And when faced with someone who needs to torture an animal in order to feel powerful, what I feel may be much simpler.
Contempt.
You want to know what strength is?
Try protecting someone weaker than you.
That is considerably harder. Are you capable of it?
