Marsupiaux qui mettent leur grossesse sur pause, mammifĂšres qui pondent des Ćufs, wombats aux crottes cubiques, oiseaux incapables de voler et koalas qui passent une grande partie de leur vie Ă dormir : la rĂ©alitĂ© est dĂ©jĂ suffisamment Ă©trange pour quâil soit inutile dâen rajouter.
Kangourous : beaucoup plus que des boxeurs
Le kangourou est devenu lâun des symboles de lâAustralie, mais ses particularitĂ©s dĂ©passent largement ses cĂ©lĂšbres bonds. Les grands kangourous peuvent franchir plusieurs mĂštres en un saut et leur Ă©norme queue musculaire fonctionne presque comme une cinquiĂšme patte lorsquâils se dĂ©placent lentement. Les femelles de plusieurs espĂšces peuvent Ă©galement suspendre le dĂ©veloppement dâun embryon grĂące Ă la diapause embryonnaire. LâopĂ©ration fut si peu efficace quâelle est entrĂ©e dans la lĂ©gende comme une guerre perdue contre les Ă©meus. Ce nâĂ©tait Ă©videmment pas une vĂ©ritable guerre, mais lâhistoire est suffisamment absurde pour ne pas avoir besoin dâĂȘtre embellie.

Ornithorynque : lâanimal qui semble avoir empruntĂ© des piĂšces partout
Lâornithorynque est un monotrĂšme : un mammifĂšre qui pond des Ćufs. Son bec souple dĂ©tecte les signaux Ă©lectriques produits par ses proies sous lâeau et le mĂąle possĂšde un Ă©peron venimeux sur chaque patte arriĂšre. Son venin peut provoquer une douleur intense chez lâĂȘtre humain, mĂȘme sâil nâest gĂ©nĂ©ralement pas considĂ©rĂ© comme mortel. Australia has a remarkable ability to make it seem as though evolution had rather more fun there than elsewhere. Marsupials that can pause a pregnancy, egg-laying mammals, wombats producing cube-shaped droppings, flightless birds and koalas that spend much of their lives asleep: reality is already strange enough without any need for exaggeration.
Kangaroos: much more than boxers
The kangaroo has become one of Australia’s great symbols, but its peculiarities go far beyond its famous hops. Large kangaroos can cover several metres in a single bound, while their enormous muscular tail functions almost like a fifth leg when they move slowly. Females of several species can also suspend an embryo’s development through embryonic diapause. And while males certainly do fight, their most spectacular move involves balancing on the tail and striking an opponent with their powerful hind legs.

Koalas: sleeping is practically a full-time occupation
No, the koala is not a bear but a marsupial. Its highly specialised diet consists essentially of eucalyptus leaves, which are low in energy, helping to explain its very long periods of rest: a koala may sleep or doze for around twenty hours a day. And beneath that cuddly appearance lies an astonishing voice. Males in particular produce deep bellows that sound as though they belong to a much larger animal.

Emus: and that improbable 1932 âwarâ
The emu is the world’s second-largest living bird after the ostrich and cannot fly, although it can run remarkably well. Alongside the kangaroo, it appears on Australia’s coat of arms. Then there is the famous 1932 âEmu Warâ: when thousands of emus damaged crops in Western Australia, soldiers equipped with machine guns were sent to reduce their numbers. The operation proved so ineffective that it entered popular legend as a war lost to the emus. It was not, of course, an actual war, but the story is absurd enough without embellishment.

Platypus: the animal that seems to have borrowed parts from everywhere
The platypus is a monotreme: an egg-laying mammal. Its soft bill detects electrical signals produced by prey underwater, while males have a venomous spur on each hind leg. The venom can cause intense pain in humans, although it is not generally considered fatal. With its bill, flat tail, webbed feet and peculiar reproduction, the creature seemed so implausible to early European naturalists that some suspected a hoax.

Tasmanian devils: noisy, powerful⊠and threatened
The Tasmanian devil is the world’s largest living carnivorous marsupial. Its screams, growls and shrieks around food have contributed greatly to its reputation, as have jaws capable of consuming bone and cartilage. Yet behind the miniature-monster image lies a species confronted since the 1990s by an extraordinarily rare transmissible cancer, devil facial tumour disease, which has devastated many wild populations. Conservation programmes have therefore become essential to its future.

Snakes and spiders: terrifying reputation, more measured reality
Yes, Australia is home to several of the world’s most venomous snakes, including the inland taipan, as well as medically significant spiders such as the Sydney funnel-web and redback. Turning the entire country into one enormous death trap, however, is a caricature. Serious bites are comparatively uncommon, antivenoms and medical protocols are highly effective, and most animals are far more interested in avoiding people than attacking them. Caution in the bush is sensible; panic rather less so.

And a few more champions of the strange

Wombats are stocky, powerful burrowing marsupials. Their most improbable claim to fame is perfectly real: their droppings are cube-shaped, a phenomenon linked to the unusual mechanical properties of their intestines.

Cockatoos are as much a part of Australia’s soundscape as its landscape. Intelligent, social and sometimes spectacularly noisy, some species have adapted perfectly to cities and learnt to exploit human resources â including, among some sulphur-crested cockatoos, the art of opening rubbish bins.

The quokka, a small marsupial particularly famous on Rottnest Island in Western Australia, owes its reputation as the âworld’s happiest animalâ to the shape of its mouth, which often gives the impression of a smile. It is not, of course, deliberately smiling for the camera: that is our human brain interpreting its expression. This does not make it any less photogenic.
A final thought
Australian wildlife is extraordinary not because it consists entirely of dangerous creatures, but because millions of years of isolation favoured lineages and adaptations rarely encountered elsewhere. Marsupials occupy remarkably diverse ecological niches, while the platypus and echidnas represent an even more singular branch of mammalian evolution. Australia is therefore not the âgiant zoo where everything is trying to kill youâ of Internet jokes. It is something far better: an enormous natural laboratory where evolution appears to have tested some particularly original ideas.
