New Mexico

The FBI mysteriously closes a solar observatory in New Mexico

The US government suddenly decided to close a solar observatory, sending the internet into a frenzy. Some were already talking about a conspiracy and blaming aliens. Hundreds of theories, some more far-fetched than others, began to emerge.

As a reminder, Sunspot is an astronomical observatory designed to study the Sun. It is located in the Sacramento Mountains, in Sunspot, New Mexico.

On 6 September 2018, the Sunspot Solar Observatory was suddenly surrounded by police and the FBI. As Sunspot was a research centre, it was open to the public. The post office next door was also evacuated.

Many people believed that the authorities were hiding a terrible secret. Everyone wondered why the government had not explained the reason for the closure.

A week later, there was still no information about the matter or any indication of when the observatory might reopen. The Otero County Sheriff said that the “FBI refused to tell us what was going on. We were simply asked to remain available.”

At first, a security issue was mentioned, before that explanation was withdrawn, which only revived the various theories.

Among them were claims that a UFO had been photographed, that there had been a sudden and abnormal solar eruption dangerous to humanity, a strange extraterrestrial appearance, or that the site had been hacked by China. Given that there are hundreds of telescopes around the world, it would be surprising if Sunspot alone had detected something strange. Except that Roswell and Area 51 are not far away, so imaginations quickly ran wild.

A few weeks later, the official explanation given was an internal investigation involving child pornography. The observatory has since reopened.

That was more than enough for conspiracy theorists to come up with countless new explanations, arguing that if this really had been the reason, the authorities would not have remained so silent and that there must therefore have been something else going on.
