Ma rencontre éclair avec Trey Songz

🇬🇧 This article is also available in English — read it here.

ACTE 3

Quand Trey apparaĂźt sur scĂšne, elle me dit :

My fleeting encounter with Trey Songz

I absolutely have to tell you this completely hilarious story, even though it dates back to 2014!

ACT 1

When we arrived at the Loews Hotel in Hollywood, two men in a roaring Lamborghini pulled up behind us, waiting for our valet to deal with them.

Things were obviously not moving quickly enough, so the driver kept revving the engine of his gleaming machine — unless, of course, he simply wanted to attract attention. My mother was naturally complaining (those who know her will not be surprised): “Does he think making all that noise is going to make things go any faster?” The valet took our luggage out of the boot while the driver of the beautiful Italian car continued desperately revving his beast. When I tried to turn my head towards them, my mother said: “No, don’t look. Ignore them.”

In the hotel lobby, she suddenly realised (I think this was at least the tenth time it had happened) that her mobile phone was still in the car. She sent me (also for about the tenth time) to fetch it while she waited in the entrance.

When I came back, she said: “I saw the two guys who were in the Lamborghini. They politely said hello, but they looked a bit strange all the same.”

ACT 2

An hour later, I decided to go down to the shopping centre beneath the hotel (yes, again!) to buy some sunglasses from my favourite shop, Chili Beans. The sales assistant asked whether I was going with her to the Trey Songz concert that evening. What concert? Apparently, the American artist was giving a free concert, provided you had registered through a website, which I had not. Being helpful (this sort of thing only happens in the US), she added me to her account. What happiness — I was going to see Trey Songz, whom I absolutely loooove. I couldn’t believe it

It took me at least fifteen minutes to try to explain to my mother who this singer was and just how famous he was (apparently not amongst her age group). I decided not to show her Trey Songz’s YouTube videos because his clips are rather
 erm
suggestive. She would have refused to come with me, and there was no chance she would let me attend a concert on Hollywood Boulevard with complete strangers.

“Pleeeeease Mum, can you imagine how lucky we are to be here today, the one day Trey Songz is here! Be nice, he’s brilliant, you’re going to love him! (yes, there are moments when a little white lie is absolutely necessary). I’m sure you know the song ‘Oh Na Na’. And if you don’t want to be in the crowd, you can even stay outside the venue and have a coffee while you wait.”

ACT 3

When Trey appeared on stage, she said to me:

– Hey, that’s him!
– See, you do know him, I told you so (although I admit I was extremely surprised).
– No, that’s the guy from the car when we arrived.
– You’re joking?
– No, he said hello to me in the lobby while you were off getting the phone.
– He’s staying in our hotel? Nooo way?
– Yes!
– What? And I missed him because of you? I could have had a photo.
– Maybe you’ll see him tomorrow morning at breakfast. (As if this sort of artist was going to have breakfast!)
– But Mum, do you realise? I could have spoken to him! Muuuuum.

Right, there is no need to dwell on my disappointment. Let’s move on.

The concert was fantastic. My mother stayed off to the side, near the production crew, while I was right at the front of the stage. As a result, I managed to take some extraordinary photographs of him.

DSCN0134And because Ann (my mother, for those who know her) never does anything like everyone else, when I came back at the end of the concert she was chatting to the television crew and a group of young people who were inviting her to “smoke” some rather questionable things (Hey, that’s my mother, guys!). They looked like old friends putting the world to rights.

ACT 4

Since Trey was staying at the same hotel as us, he would surely go straight back there after the concert to take a shower. I suddenly realised we had to move quickly and leave immediately, otherwise I would miss the moment he arrived in the lobby!

By the time my mother had said goodbye to all her new friends (yeah), we rushed towards the hotel entrance and
a security guard stopped us dead. DSCN0130I showed him our room key card, but it made no difference. We could not get back into the Loews. We had to wait until Trey Songz had gone through. In the meantime, they were blocking the entrance. This is where being with “old people” becomes useful! (thanks Mum). She told the enormous security guard “that she couldn’t care less about this Mr Trey and nobody was going to stop her getting into a hotel that had cost her a fortune”. Slightly thrown by this, the guy suggested that, since we had a magnetic room key, we could go in via the swimming pool. He explained how to get there and apologised again for the inconvenience: “but you understand, there are so many fans”.

I don’t think I have ever run so fast through hotel corridors in my life, thinking that I might reach the ground floor too late and miss him (except perhaps at the breakfast he doesn’t eat, right Mum?).

DSCN0167And just like in a Hollywood film (which was rather appropriate, given where we were), at the junction between the corridor leading to the lift and the main entrance, carried along by my momentum, I ran straight into the arms of
 his security team!

Trey, standing just behind the victim of the collision, spotted me and came over to give me a hug (soooooo luuuucky!).

Of course, the photographs were taken on a mobile phone (and guess who didn’t take the one where he kissed me on the forehead
 grrr?).

Do I need to tell you that Trey Songz did indeed not have breakfast — at least not at the same time as us — but that we did see him leave with his team the following morning?

It remains a wonderful memory. Getting to see his concert and then actually meet him was completely unexpected after such a frantic run through the hotel corridors.

Below are the links to two videos I recorded. The quality is very poor and terribly shaky (but you can hear his voice clearly, and if you are over 40 you will probably say: “Ah yes, that’s him, now I recognise him!”).

In conclusion, travelling with your mother can be rubbish, but not with mine, because she is simply brilliant.
