Le premier homme enceinte est américain

🇬🇧 This article is also available in English — read it here.

The first pregnant man is American

Thomas Beatie comes from the magnificent island of Hawaii. At first glance, there is little about him that suggests a woman, despite his delicate features and very gentle way of speaking. He tells us his extraordinary story with a slightly enigmatic smile.

I came across Thomas indirectly when he took part in the French reality television programme Secret Story in 2016, broadcast on TF1 in a prime-time slot.

There is nothing particularly extraordinary about that, except that one might wonder what an American with a limited command of French was doing in this rather mainstream programme. When you discover that Thomas, born on 20 January 1974 in Honolulu, was originally named Tracy Lehuanani LaGondino, the surprise is considerable. My first reaction, quite naturally, was curiosity. A quick internet search shows Tracy before Thomas: a pretty, smiling young woman who later became an elegant man.

Born in a female body, the Hawaiian officially began his transition towards a male body as an adult, including testosterone treatment and chest surgery. He subsequently obtained an amended Hawaiian birth certificate legally recognising him as male.

Thomas married Nancy in 2003. As Nancy was unable to carry a child and Thomas had retained his reproductive organs, he agreed to carry their child himself. In 2008, he became known around the world as the first legally recognised man to give birth. Through artificial insemination, he went on to give birth to three children. Perhaps the most striking detail is that Thomas did not give birth by Caesarean section, but vaginally.

Thomas’s extraordinary story fascinated media around the world. He was even invited onto The Oprah Winfrey Show. Thomas explained that his children simply call him Dad and are not concerned by the way they were born or by the fact that he was once a woman.

Not everything was straightforward, however. When Thomas later sought a divorce while living in Arizona, he encountered an unexpected legal obstacle. The family court concluded that it lacked jurisdiction to grant the divorce, treating the marriage as a union between two women despite Thomas’s amended Hawaiian birth certificate recognising him as male. The fact that he had retained the ability to bear children and had actually given birth to the couple’s three children formed part of the court’s reasoning.

In 2014, the Arizona Court of Appeals reversed that decision. It noted that Thomas had legally amended his Hawaiian birth certificate before marrying and that Thomas and Nancy had therefore entered into a marriage in Hawaii that was legally recognised at the time as being between a man and a woman. The court concluded that the marriage was also valid in Arizona and that the family court had jurisdiction to dissolve it.

Thomas has since remarried and lives his life like any other man.

And what about Belgium?

Attitudes are nevertheless changing slowly, even in Belgium. An article published in the Flemish newspaper De Standaard on 8 June 2017 reported that Yelle, a 26-year-old transgender man, had given birth to a baby girl.

Reading the interview makes it even clearer how difficult it can be to suspend a transition temporarily in order to carry a pregnancy. Yelle explained that at no point during his pregnancy did he feel like a woman, although feeling the baby move for the first time remained an unforgettable moment. Precisely because Yelle knew that his story might shock some people, he decided to make it public.

According to the young man, pregnancy among transgender men remains a highly taboo subject in our society, even though many trans men would like to have a child. Carrying the child himself was the solution available to Yelle because his partner, who was also transgender, could not carry a child. Adoption or surrogacy would have brought its own difficulties and taken a great deal of time. He had decided to stop his testosterone injections around two years earlier, temporarily putting the physical aspects of his transition on hold.

Barely a week after giving birth, Yelle resumed his hormone treatment.
