Rare mammal observed at Belgian coast

An unusual marine creature has been observed at the Belgian seaside, in Ostend. Photographers could capture the unique sight. The snapshot helped researchers to identify the mammal as a dwarf sperm whale.

The aquatic animal has been spotted by sightseers during a sea excursion coordinated by North Sea Pelagics. This organization gives tourists the opportunity to catch sight of local wildlife in their natural habitat.

Jeremy Demey from North Sea Pelagics explains that the encounter with the cetacean is one of a kind. The dwarf sperm whale usually lives in tropical and subtropical waters. In recent years the number of stranded carcasses on British shores has increased. Therefore, scientists only studied and documented the cadavers of the mammal until now.
